The Hole (2009)

After their mother moves them from New York City to a small town, Dane and Lucas discover a padlocked trap door in the basement floor.  Along with their neighbor Julie, they break the locks and open the door to find a hole.

When they try to discover how deep it is, but a series of experiments, such as dropping items into it or lowering a camera down on a string never reach the bottom.

The thought of that in my basement really freaks me out.  They're kids so they have no choice in living there, but you'd think Mom may have wanted to check what was under the rug in the middle of the basement before moving in.  Maybe I'm the only one, but anything spooky in a house, and I don't want to live there.

The hole releases a persons darkest fears which start to haunt our teens. Lucas is afraid of clowns and a creepy clown doll keeps showing up in his room.

The movie isn't scary - other than the idea of a bottomless pit in the basement - but it's pretty fun. Directed by Joe Dante, who directed Gremlins.
